First faceoff for Lock Monsters is Friday night, Oct. 9

Tuesday, August 04, 1998

LOWELL The expansion Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League have announced their inaugural 1998-99 season schedule, with the opening weekend featuring back-to-back home games at Paul E. Tsongas Arena.

The Lock Monsters will face off against the Portland Pirates on Friday, Oct. 9, and the Beast of New Haven on Saturday, Oct. 10. Both games start at 7:35.

The opening weekend will include a variety of special events and promotions in conjunction with the games.

Were ecstatic about our schedule, said Lock Monsters General Manager Tom Rowe. Fans told us they wanted primarily weekend dates, with some Tuesday and Wednesday games sprinkled in, and the league granted us those requests. Thirty-one of our 40 home games are on the weekend.

The Lock Monsters have 13 Saturday home games and 10 Friday night home games.

This is a great schedule for working people and families, said Rowe. It has also enabled us to put together outstanding 10- and 20-game ticket plans.

Those packages will benefit fans who cant make it to all the games, but want to make sure they have their seats reserved for the most popular games.

The regular season runs from Oct. 9 to April 18.

While seven of the first eight games are at Tsongas, the longest home stand is a seven-game stretch from Jan. 30-Feb. 16.

February is the busiest month of the home schedule with 11 games on the calendar, while January features the most road games with nine. The longest stretch away from home is five straight games between Dec. 4-13.

Highlights of the schedule include a New Years Day battle in the evening against Kentucky and a Valentines Day faceoff against Fredericton.

The starting times for Friday and Saturday night home games is 7:35. There is one Saturday matinee game Feb. 20 against Portland (2:05).

Tuesday and Wednesday home games start at 7:05, and Sunday home games begin at either 4:05 or 5:05 p.m.

Special 10-, 20- and 40-game ticket packages for Lock Monsters home games are currently on sale.
