Lock Monsters give up a late goal to lose in debut

FALL RIVER -- The Lowell Lock Monsters lost their first-ever preseason game when Jeff Scharf's goal at 18:09 of the third period last night lifted the Providence Bruins to a 3-2 victory at Driscoll Arena.

The Lock Monsters had twice tied the game on goals by a pair of 22-year-old former CLockson University players, Nick Windsor at 16:55 of the second period and defenseman Buddy Wallace at 10:49 of the third period.

Jay Henderson and Charlie Moxham scored for Providence.

Mark McArthur and Steve Valiquette split the goaltending chores for the Lock Monsters, who were outshot 29-27.

Dave Brumby was in goal for the Bruins.

These American Hockey League affiliates of the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins will play again at the Chelmsford Arena (formerly Tully Forum) Monday night at 7:00. Tickets are available at the door for $5. All proceeds go to the United Way.

P-Bruins win preseason opener

FALL RIVER -- The Providence Bruins opened the preseason with a 3-2 victory over the expansion Lowell Lock Monsters at Driscoll Arena last night.

Rookie Jeff Scharf scored the game-winner with 1:51 remaining in regulation. Scharf completed a 2-on-1 break with David Wainwright and picked the lower right-hand corner on Lowell goaltender Mark McArthur.

The Lock Monsters made it 2-2 at 10:47 of the third period on a goal from Buddy Wallace three minutes after the P-Bruins' Charlie Moxham had given Providence a 2-1 advantage.

Jay Henderson opened the scoring for Providence at 5:29 of the first period as he beat goaltender Steve Valiquette with a wristshot from the left wing. Nick Windsor tied the game for Lowell with a power-play goal at 16:55 of the second. Goaltender Dave Brumby earned the win for the Bruins, making 21 saves.

Cranston's Earl Cronan dropped the gloves with Lowell's Chris Wismer at 10:05 of the first period. All proceeds will benefit the SWS Youth Hockey program. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Billerica, Mass., at 7 p.m.
